Ophthalmology
The Ophthalmology Department is the section of the hospital that attends to people who complain of problems with the eyes and their surrounding structures. It is located on the first floor of the JICA Wing, where the consultation Clinics are, and accessible through Gate #1 of the hospital. The Department consists of; three consultation rooms, a treatment room, an investigation room, a two-bed Day-Surgery suite, a reception area, and a 40-seat waiting area. The PNG Blindness Prevention INC also runs a low-cost optical shop next door in an adjacent room. A ten/10 bed Ward space is also available for inpatient management.
Staffing consists of; four/4 General Ophthalmologists Consultants, four/4 Trainee Registrars, four/4 Specialist Ophthalmic Nurses, two/2 General Nurses and a Clerk. Similar to ENT and Dermatology Departments, Ophthalmology Department operates from 7.45am to 4.06pm weekdays only. After hours and weekends are covered by a rostered team to attend to emergencies and interdisciplinary consultations.
Patients have to make prior appointments at the hospital’s reception, to be seen in the Departments Clinic. Emergencies are seen as they present.
Services provided by the Ophthalmology Department are; general ophthalmic consultation, surgery, medical treatments, inpatient care, optical service, diabetic eye disease laser treatments, inter-disciplinary consultations, provincial and private referrals and consultations, student/employee/drivers visual certifications and out-reach services to urban clinics and provinces. To improve services, the Ophthalmology Department with the Hospital Management are working in collaboration with UPNG School of Medicine and Health Sciences, Pacific Private Hospital/PIH, Fred Hollows Foundation Australia/New Zealand and Lions International.
