Pathology
The Port Moresby General Hospital Pathology Laboratory is a 24-hour operated facility.
As this is a training hospital, our staff also comprises of training Residents, Registrars, and Pathologists from the National Department of Health. It not only serves the Patients at the Port Moresby General Hospital but also NCDPHA, Private Health Facilities in Port Moresby as well as other Hospitals in the Country.
The Pathology Laboratory assists the Doctors in making the correct diagnosis for their patient. It involves the examination of tissues, organs, stool, bodily fluids (blood, aspirates, sputum, CSF, pus, urine, and semen) and autopsies.
The following are the 6 main sections in Pathology and the tests that can be offered:
1. Anatomical Pathology (Histopathology, Cytopathology)
I. Histology (Diagnosis of diseases from tissue samples)
II. Cytology (Diagnosis of diseases from bodily fluids containing cells)
III. Fine Needle Aspirate Biopsy – Performed on lumps in the body. Allows for the differentiation of Cancer, infections (such as Tuberculosis), and other non-cancer growths in the body.
2. Forensic Pathology
I. Autopsies for both Medical and Coroner’s Cases
3. Haematology
I. Complete Blood Count
II. Coagulation Profile
III. Consultation for Blood Films and Bone Marrow Aspirates with Trephine Biopsy – To rule out blood disorders such as cancer in the blood.
4. Biochemistry
I. Urea and Electrolytes
II. Uric Acid
III. Glucose
IV. Liver Function Tests
V. Pancreatic enzymes
VI. Cardiac Enzymes
VII. Lipid Profile
VIII. Urinalysis
IX. Immunochemistry
5. Microbiology
I. Microscopy, culture, and sensitivity for bacterial pathogens
II. Malaria Microscopy
III. Dengue Serology
IV. Semen Analysis
6. Blood Transfusion
Adjoined to the lab is the Sir Brian Bell Collection Centre in which the Public can donate blood for the patients at PMGH and other Private and Public Hospitals in Port Moresby. The Staff also attend blood bank drives in which they visit NGOs and Public Institutions or places for blood donations. To make the blood safe and available for the Patient the blood is given to the lab to perform tests on it. This includes grouping it into the Blood Groups “O”, “A”, “B” or “AB” and testing for Transfusion, Transmissible Infections such as HIV, Syphilis, and Hepatitis B.
