Internal Medicine

The Medicine Department of Port Moresby General Hospital covers a wide range of general medicine diagnostics and treatments generated from its’ Emergency and Outpatients Departments.

Of particular note is the Hospital’s specialty in snake bite treatments. With the estimated snakebite mortality in Papua New Guinea (3.5/100 000 population per year) being about 100-fold higher than, for instance, in Australia, Port Moresby General Hospital (PMGH) has the largest caseload of seriously envenomed patients in PNG. Between 1990 and 1992, snakebite is said to have accounted for about 50% of all patients requiring ventilation at this hospital.

The Hospital provides an important service to its country in diagnosis and treatment of general medicine conditions through this department.
